Hi there, this is Grace's and Gina's blog post about our experience visiting the mcgarrybowen advertising agency. As soon as we got there, they went straight to business. This wasn't a "typical" visit to an advertising agency where you get a tour, they brag about their accomplishments, and they tell you how you could become an intern for them someday. The two women who spoke to us at mcgarrybowen took a completely different approach. They didn't walk us around the agency and point out cool bragging points, but instead took us straight into a conference room to explain who they are and share some of their favorite campaigns with us. It was an amazing opportunity to be able to see the underlying motivations and insights behind real campaigns. Advertising agencies don't usually show you the behind the scenes briefs. All of the agencies we had visited before showed the completed campaigns and bragged about how many awards they won for those campaigns. We really enjoyed getting to see how mcgarrybowen actually does their work everyday and the women were very honest when they answered all of our questions.
This mcgarrybowen agency in London is unique not only in the way they presented themselves and their work to us, but also in how the agency itself is structured. With the exception of a conference room and a small completely glass encased "brainstorming" room, the entire agency had an open floor plan. If you work there you don't even have your own desk, just a locker with your stuff in it and each day when you come in you can choose a place you'd like to set up and work, moving around as freely as you please. This mentality is very unique and forward-thinking, and they believe it allows for a much more dynamic environment where ideas can flow between workers and where there is no intimidation among the ranks. CEOs sit alongside everyone else and everyone gets a chance to make their voice heard. This particular location of mcgarrybowen is only four years old but in that time they've won major accounts such as Honda and Adidas and created wildly successful campaigns. It'll be interesting to see where this agency goes in the future and what kind of innovative work they'll put out in the marketplace.
